Oscars 2013...Red Carpet, Best Dressed...

My vote for best dressed at the 2013 Oscars? The Academy Awards Green Room, (where presenters and other VIPs mingle during the telecast)...Architectural Digest selected interior designer Madeline Stuart to design this year's 750 square foot room.  I love the mix of styles and shades (modern and traditional, cool crisp whites with warm brown tones) and how fabulous are those chocolate brown chevron chairs (Schumacher Shock Wave fabric)?

I discovered an interview with Madeline Stuart discussing the inspiration behind this room.  She so eloquently stated, "When people walk into the room on Oscar night, it's my hope they see this as both a refuge from the madness of what must be going on back stage that evening, but also, I want this to be a glittering surprise.  I want them to walk in and feel as though they have stepped into the most stunning set that might have been created by Cedric Gibbons in the 1930's, let's say, for The Thin Man."  She also mentions, "I wanted the room to really embody a 1930's aesthetic, the streamlined, modern, idealized look of Hollywood films from the 1930's and 40's, so I chose furniture that seemed to reflect that idealized, elegant, glamorous, and sophisticated look....to capture a little bit of that glamour, and that magic, and that wonder that is The Academy Awards."

Finally, she adds, "I have a fondness for the stars of the past and the idea of them mingling and sharing a laugh or a relaxed moment with the stars of today is really intriguing for me.  So, I love to conjure the notion of George Clooney sitting at the bar...and having a laugh or sharing a moment with Cary Grant."

Well said and well executed on the design front!  Clooney and Grant...Can I come too?

Top 5 favorite gowns...

Jessica Chastain, Armani Prive... Loved the gorgeous sleek sophisticated classic silhouette w modern geometric linear detail of the sequins....so chic on her...although hard to tell, she said the under layer of gown is a bronze color, almost shade of her hair w pink sequin overlay, but appeared to be an overall nude hue...

Naomi Watts, Armani Prive... She has nailed this season red carpet fashion! Loved this unique, asymmetrical, Deco design...color and style are stunning on her...dress fit her like a glove.

Stacey Keibler, Naeem Khan... Dress was a complete work of art...the lines of the beading perfectly complemented her amazing figure, gunmetal color was perfect...did not love her hair, worthwhile attempt at 'old Hollywood glamour' but somehow the execution failed...

Jennifer Garner, Gucci... Loved everything about this dress, the fab deep wine color was gorgeous on her, simple sheath front w fabulous ruffle detail down back...loved her deco statement necklace too!

Leslie Mann, Andrew Gn - (at Vanity Fair party), Adored her in an off-red/orange gown w long pouf sleeves and embroidery/beaded detail along neckline...gorgeous!

Also Loved (Honorable Mentions)...

Anne Hathaway, Gucci... Loved this pale pink silk satin gown on her! very simple, minimalist front w detail in the back, looked fab w the just-statement-enough choker necklace, delicate and bold at same time.

Nicole Kidman, L'Wren Scott... Absolutely loved the formfitting silhouette, unique black and gold color combo, and detail of this beaded-sequin gown....esp loved the eye catching detail at the bottom/train...looked much better live, almost had a 'liquid' effect.

Sandra Bullock, Elie Saab... At first glance I didn't love it, but I grew to love the color and beading of this dress and high neck....perfect for her...also loved the sweet side barrette.

Catherine Zeta Jones, Zuhair Murad... Beautiful gold beaded gown on her, didn't love the 'curly' sequin lines toward bottom, but overall very beautiful on her and formfitting style was very flattering too.

Renee Zellweger, Carolina Herrera... Loved the sleek, exquisite gold gown, so beautiful and figure flattering, but color washed her out a bit...and what was with her (botox?) malfunction? Her eyes and mouth made the strangest movements during her interview!

Jennifer Hudson, Roberto Cavalli... Loved the rich, deep blue w interesting fabric detail, it looked like little mosaics of (velvet?) Almost looked like a shimmery animal print, but in a tasteful way due to the modest cut of dress (high neck and long sleeves). Conservative style balanced the swanky fabric... didn't love the ill-placed slit in front...seemed awkward upon movement.

Kerry Washington, Miu Miu... Adorable!! Colorful and intricate beaded detail on top w beautiful shade of off-red on bottom....typically not a big fan of such contrasting top and bottom, but loved this on her! Fun and festive for the Oscars!

Jenna Dewan-Tatum... Stunning expectant mama in beaded black dress! Scalloped, delicate neckline and beading were so flattering on her preggo figure...

Loved w a CAVEAT...

Amy Adams, Oscar de la Renta... Loved her hair, the gown itself, and all the beautiful ruffles, but wish the gown had been a different color on her...fair skinned can be tricky to pull off pale colors. And although she looked fab in the nude gown at GG, this pale grey/blue shade didn't seem to work as well...

Jennifer Lawrence, Dior... The silhouette and fabric of her Dior dress were gorgeous, but I didn't think it was great for her figure...top was ill fitting...but, loved the delicate necklace down the back!

I am wondering if Dior somehow staged this fall, (ha, ha) as the photos showcase the beauty and detail of the dress fabric!

Jennifer Aniston, Valentino... Pretty as always but rather safe and boring, lacking any originality or interesting style...she could have wowed us more.

Halle Berry, Versace... Amazing sequin gown w Deco, linear detail...the lines perfectly flattered her flawless figure and nod to 007, however, did not photograph well....style was a bit 80's-ish...looked much better live.

Jane Fonda, Versace... Loved the bold yellow color of her gown but perhaps it was a bit loud for her age?  The style was certainly age-appropriate and flattering....oh, who am I kidding, she is so dynamic, she can pull off anything! Also, her skin is flawless... Can i have what she is having?

Did NOT love...

Charlize Theron, Dior... Style of dress when paired w her stark hair style was too harsh/severe w the sharp lines....the bold hair needed a softer more feminine dress to offset...(like the one in her dance number, much better on her w the short hair)

I loved this airy, feminine dress on her much more than the Dior

Kristen Stewart... Her dress was lovely, but did she forget to wash, much less comb her hair? And why the ever-awkward stage presence? She is always so fidgety w such awkward facial expressions...

Amanda Seyfried, Alexander McQueen...Halter style is pretty but color washed her out and somehow top was gaping (which photograph does not show, but seemed ill-fitting live)...

Reese Witherspoon, LV... Love this talented and adorable actress, but I did not love the LV dress on her...it just didn't seem to flatter her at all...

Heidi Klum and Brandi Glanville both had plunging necklines that were WAY too extreme.  Both of these gowns had very high potential with a more conservative cut...

Fun as always to watch these fashion moments unfold on the red carpet!

Fashion 'Crushes'

OK, onto a more light-hearted post...

In the spirit of one of the most widely anticipated red-carpet fashion moments, this Sunday's Academy Awards show, I wanted to share some pics of a few fashion 'crushes'...These ladies just seem to always look effortlessly stunning, in thoughtful ensembles, creative and unique, yet tasteful.

One thing all of these women seem to have in common, is that they are often smiling...Of course, we all know well it is impossible to ALWAYS be happy and smiling, but I do believe that true beauty radiates from the inside.  The fun fashion is just the icing on the cake.  But more importantly, if we focus on identifying and pursuing the things in life that truly make us happy, passionate, and inspired, only then can we experience authentic beauty....as fashion icon Audrey Hepburn once stated...

(1) Blake Lively...To my husband's dismay, I am a shameless Gossip Girl fan and have since admired the fun fashion statements made by this adorable actress, both on and off the show...

(2) Kate Middleton...I mean, the photos speak for themselves...what more can you say about her style? Classic, elegant, flawless...

I think this one is my favorite of all dresses on her....

(3) Gwyneth Paltrow...I love her simplistic, (sometimes) edgy, colorful style...

(4) Any 'ode to fashion' blog post just has to include Jennifer Aniston, right?  It is not to say she takes any big risks or makes a huge statement, but she always looks put together and chic...

(5) Olivia Palermo...love the unique pieces she puts together...of all of these celebs, she seems to be the most fashion-forward

(6) Kate Hudson...I love how versatile her style is...she can go from fun/quirky California hippie to glamorous red carpet in a nanosecond!

To be continued ; )
