Whether Modern or Traditional, LOVING the Buffalo Check

It is nothing new or novel in the world of design.  But lately, I have been loving it: the rythmic, geometrically pleasing pattern of the classic buffalo check (BC).  Some may argue it is an antiquated, over-done, French country look.  But, when mixed with more contemporary features, (a Moroccan mirror or funky light fixture, for example), it can serve as that one traditional design element that grounds a space.    Furthermore, when incorporated in a larger scale (the bigger the better!) it can take on a more modern vibe, with a statement graphic punch.  Personally, I love the buffalo check when used in either a traditional or modern design.

In the following examples, the buffalo check (BC) can be visually stimulating, when mixed with modern elements:

Bold BC scale and color in the wallpaper mixed with funky light fixture creates a lively dining space

BC wallpaper mixed with bold large scale red and white striped chair and vintage-y artwork creates eclectic little nook

BC headboards mixed with quirky pendants gives a modern-cabin vibe

LOVE how these tiles are arranged to create a large scale BC pattern on the kitchen floor, mixed with modern elements: stainless island drawers and bold pendants

Mixed with modern/sleek task lighting, ceramic accessories...cozy little reading space!

Emily Jenkins Followhill...Traditional BC chair is mixed with burnt orange headboard, contemporary patterns (Greek key, chevron), nightstand, and crisp white lamp...creates a masculine bedroom

Ethan Allen, here BC is used on more modern wing chair silhouette, exterior shutters used on interior and interesting asymmetrical arrangement of the pops of red against this black and white palette!

Restoration the industrial chic meets rustic lodge vibe...perfect for a boys' room!

DIY project alert! Midcentury chairs were salvaged and recovered (seat only) in buffalo
Traditional BC balanced by pops of coral in zebra pillow, pair of stools, and abstract art above bed...

The buffalo check can be visually soothing in a more traditional room design as well, particularly in a monochromatic color scheme, creating a peaceful and inviting space...
