Hooray! Bravo's MDD is BACK!

Another Bravo guilty-pleasure show has returned! Million Dollar Decorators has returned for its second season just this past week.

The show features premiere Los Angeles interior designers, Jeffrey Alan Marks, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kathryn Ireland, and Mary McDonald.  Of course they all possess very dynamic, quirky, and egocentric personalities that most highly creative types tend to have.  Mix these crazy personalities with the equally crazy clients they represent, and it equals a high degree of entertaining TV drama (it is Bravo, after all, what do you expect!?)

Since I have a love for all things related to interior design, naturally, this show is an easy fit for me.  It is so much fun to observe their varying, unique, and distinctive styles and to hear them discuss their design background and inspiration.  They are all so creative and genius in their own ways, and their projects most often revolve around highly UN-anticipated obstacles, challenges, and dramas....which make it really interesting to see how they persevere.

Attached are some examples of their work:

Mary McDonald...

DESIGN AESTHETIC: sophisticated, chic, always a strong graphic, often a large-scale painted wood floor, with pops of bold color.  High glamour, metallics, animal prints, black & white, etc....Though, she has designed some beautiful, peaceful, neutral rooms as well....She does both masculine and feminine vibes very well.

PERSONALITY: egomaniac, a bit pretentious, highly opinionated, decisive, blunt, but softens with occasional self-deprecation...

Kathryn Ireland:

DESIGN AESTHETIC: from France originally, she has a flair for beautiful, colorful textiles..Suzanni's, paisley's, florals, (has her own textile line)...lots of French country influences, farmhouse-chic, eclectic mix of European styles. Traditional vibes mixed with more modern, bold colors and patterns....

PERSONALITY: free-spirited, quirky, authentic, a bit nutty-yet-charming, self-confident, HILARIOUS, quick-witted, always having a drama with her housekeeper, Jacqueline, the fellow wine-drinker...

Martyn Lawrence Bullard:

DESIGN AESTHETIC: jet-setter, edgy, occasional rock-and-roll vibe, international influences, perhaps largest versatility in adapting to design styles of his clients (more than other designers), lots of bold color, graphic textiles, wallpapers, animal prints, LOTS of texture, often masculine vibe...

PERSONALITY: highly eccentric, HILARIOUS, most egotistical of the group, flamboyant, dramatic, and perhaps my favorite attribute: chocoholic (I hear you, Mister!)

Jeffrey Alan Marks:

DESIGN AESTHETIC: classic, cool, hip, beachy vibe, clean lines, soft palettes, can sway more modern OR more pottery barn-ish...

PERSONALITY: the least dynamic of the group, reserved, but sophisticated, relationship drama usually centers around spats with his partner (is he a model or interior designer or both!?)

My Life is NOW Complete!

As a former speed skater (yes, RANDOM sport, I know), I am crazy about ice skating! Perhaps due to the ridiculous number of hours I spent growing up on ice, it literally feels like home to me.  The glorious sound of ice cracking under your blades, the white, beautiful, glistening, grandiose sight of a freshly finished rink, the oddly satisfying distinct smell of the ice arena (something of the variety of metallic/oil/skate-sharpeners/Zamboni?)....

After working up a sweat from only ONE session of corralling, dressing, bribing, and lacing up the skates of my three little ones, I feel more appreciative and thankful to my parents than ever before.  They spent countless days and YEARS devoting so much time and effort to this sport.  As my friend Katie always says about anything worthwhile, "It is A LOT of work to have this much fun!"....For some it is sailing, boating, skiing, camping, or Disney-World-going....Regardless of your recreation/sport of choice, these words could not ring more true.  But, of course, it isn't until you are a parent yourself, that you truly recognize and appreciate these efforts.  Is it worth it? Looking back, my fondest childhood memories were from experiences: travel, sports, theatre, you name it....so I give it a resounding YES!!

This year, for the first time, all THREE of my little ones finally got out on the ice.  I signed them all up for skating lessons, and although they all tried it the first day, I could not get my youngest, Caroline (3 yrs old) to make a repeat performance.  Oh well, perhaps she will feel her Halloween-induced superhero bravery again soon.  At least I got a couple photos of them all on the ice and with their adorable little ice skates on!  Yes, my life is NOW complete!

With snowpants on, ready to go!

After plenty of blood, sweat, and tears (ok, not THAT dramatic), they FINALLY have on their adorable little ice skates!

Not very enthusiastic, but putting on a brave face...

The cone is your friend!

A stand-off on all fours: You are NOT going to make me do this, are you?

I'm DONE Mom, get me off the ice!
