I came across an interesting article this weekend in the Wall Street Journal...."The Brass Revival in Home Decor" by David A. Keeps...No worries, he is not referring to the 80's outdated, overly ornate brass fixtures that are cause for sunglasses. This is a more under-stated, refined use of brass and gold.
First, let me say that the 'brass revival' is more of a re-invent or re-engineer of a classic gold look. Gold finishes have been used for centuries in home design, and this warm metallic element is truly timeless. But, in the 80's, designers and builders went a bit overboard with loud (often gaudy) brass fixtures, so the look eventually grew stale and gave way to cooler metallic tones such as chrome, stainless, and nickel, as used by designers over the last couple decades.
What designers seem to be doing now, is an introduction of brass and gold accents in a fresh new way with interesting textures such as hammered, honed, unlacquered, or antique finishes. Gold and brass tones are popping up in mirrors, lighting, kitchen fixtures, furniture accents, and accessories. Just a splash here and there can provide a little warmth and charm. One of my favorites, for example, is Jonathan Adler's Jacques Lucite and Brass collection: coffee table, side table, and etagere (see pics below). I particularly love gold finishes when paired with taupe, robin's egg blue, grass green, chocolate brown, and for a more lively combo, try a mix with orange or coral (think girl's bedroom or dining room).
